A scoping review on acute gastrointestinal surgical complications in immunocompromised pediatric patients

Abstract Background Gastrointestinal complications are becoming increasingly more common and pose a significant risk on the health of children with compromised immunity caused by various etiologies such as chemotherapy posttransplantation immunosuppression. We aim to review abdominal in immunocompromised their respective management. Main body This is scoping literature. PubMed, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, Scopus libraries were searched for relevant articles. Extracted data included immunity, gastrointestinal children, diagnosis, treatment these pathologies. Examples include, but not limited to, neutropenic enterocolitis, acute appendicitis, bowel perforation, acalculous cholecystitis, pancreatitis. Our literature showed that bacterial fungal infections major causes exacerbation mortality. The main cause immunosuppression enterocolitis pancreatitis chemotherapy, management pathologies using intravenous fluids, antibiotic therapy, granulocyte-stimulating factors current standard care. Surgical intervention uncommon reserved complicated cases. That said, appendicitis laparoscopy mainstay treatment. However, systemic infections, nonsurgical interventions transfusion rest gold standard. As percutaneous cholecystectomy superior laparotomy other surgical interventions.
